A Letter of Protection: What it is and How it Can Help You After a Car Accident.

If you’ve been seriously injured in a car accident and you can’t afford doctor visits out of pocket, what can you do?

WHAT IS A LETTER OF PROTECTION? (LOP)

A Letter of Protection, commonly called an LOP, is an agreement between you, your medical provider, and your attorney’s office.  This agreement is a promise to pay the medical provider their bill out of any settlement that your attorney’s office collects on your behalf. Think of a LOP as an I.O.U!

In exchange for this promise, the medical provider agrees to provide you medical treatment without upfront payments, and will not turn you over to collections while your case is still open with your attorney.  Using an “LOP medical provider” can also be advantageous in keeping case expenses low, as most medical providers who will accept an LOP will not charge your attorney’s office to receive copies of your medical records and bills.

An LOP is often a necessary part of a personal injury case because many of our clients cannot, nor should they, have to pay for medical care up front and then wait months for a personal injury settlement to be reimbursed. With an LOP you get the medical care you need without the additional financial hardship of paying for your medical care upfront
